At The Rusty Pixel we have just finished a family crest graphic for the Schmitt’s based on their specific concept and 100% custom designed. The creation of any family crest or coat of arms is very similar process to the creation of a business logo — we first figure out the required elements, symbols, colors, and text along with the desired style before we start designing anything.
All family crests have a bunch of different elements and this one is no exception — everything from a stag, horseshoe, shamrock, stars, oak leaves, wheat, and an arcing banner with their last-name in a serif-style font. Some of these elements were pulled directly from the actual Schmitt family crest, while others are completely new and added because of their importance to their family. We took both of these old and new elements and combined them together in a creative way and with a uniform style so everything matched perfectly.
The crest is designed as a two-tone silhouette which is important because of how they intended on using it — everything from stone engraving to vinyl decals. This two tone-style is also unique for family crests so it gives the design a more modern look and feel.
From Wisconsin, the Schmitt family is very happy with their new creative family crest which they will enjoy for generations to come. What do you think of the design? Does your family have family crest or coat of arms?
