Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to finish my new web site?

Every web site is different, but the typical semi-custom website takes about 2 to 6 weeks to complete. The typical 100% custom web site takes about 4 to 8 weeks to complete. Of course your new web site could easily be completed sooner or take even longer depending on the number of features and pages you require. Additionally, how quickly you respond to requests, supply us content, and approve each step of your new websites creation will factor into the amount of time it will take to complete your project.

Q: Can I have any domain name (or URL) I want for my new web site?

Yes, you can have any domain name you wish, but only as long as it is available (choose from .com, .net, .org, etc). Please note that even though a domain name appears to be available (because there is no website when you type in the URL), it might already be registered by someone else. We can suggest alternate available domain names if you first choice is already taken. Additional domain names can be purchased if you would like (additional) and can be forwarded to your primary URL.

Q: How does creating a brand new web site work?

For detailed step-by-step descriptions and information on how the web site design creation process works for our semi-custom websites, click here. For our 100% custom designed web sites, click here.

Q: What is the difference between a 100% custom and a semi-custom web site?

Both packages are similar, but with a few important differences. With both kind of web sites you will receive a high-quality website with your content added, standard SEO, domain name, hosting, pages, images, etc – The major difference is that the semi-custom web site are based off of existing predesigned frameworks that we will customize to fit your exact needs, while the 100% custom web sites are made from scratch specifically for you from the ground up. Typically newer startup businesses and those looking for a quality web presence will opt for a semi-custom web design; While established businesses and those looking for a truly unique web presence will opt for a 100% custom designed website. Q: Are you going to build my new web site then vanish all of a sudden?

The Rusty Pixel has been in business since 2006 so rest assured that we are not going anywhere. Rusty R., the owner and lead graphic designer, has been in business for himself since 2003 and has nearly 15 years of professional web designer experience. We will always be available to do any website maintenance, web changes or questions that you might have over the coming months and years.

Q: Am I going to have to deal with someone in India or China that does not speak English very well?

No, you will only deal with The Rusty Pixel staff. We are a locally owned Florida business that has been designing logos, developing websites, and creating print/graphic design projects since 2006 and we love what we do. Based in Central Florida in Brevard County on Florida’s beautiful Space Coast, our headquarters is in Rockledge, FLA which is just east of Orlando, Florida and just north of Melbourne, FL (near the Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center).

Q: Once my new web site is finished how can changes and updates be made to it?

You have two options for typically web changes, website updates and regular maintenance once your new site is finished. First, we will always be available to make any necessary changes and updates that you may require. We pride ourselves on making your necessary web site changes and updates quickly (normally within 1 business day). We also offer monthly maintenance packages if you plan on having us make frequent updates to your web site.

The second option is a Content Management Systems (CMS) which can be added to any of our web design packages. A CMS allows you to make changes to your web site yourself using an interface similar to a online mail client or standard word processor – So no coding knowledge is required whatsoever. Our preferred CMS is built on the popular WordPress platform giving you access to all parts of your new website including the ability to add, edit or delete text, images, navigational buttons, links, page formatting, etc. Even if you opt for the CMS we are still available to help with any website changes or updates both large and small.

Q: What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A content management system (or CMS) works perfectly for those who plan on editing or updating their web site themselves at least three or more times every month. With a CMS you can easily make changes to your web site yourself (such as adding, removing and editing pages, text, posts, links, images, etc). There is absolutely no coding knowledge necessary to use and it is easy to learn (similar to a word processor). Of course we are always available to make any changes to your web site that you might require. Additionally, we also offer maintenance packages for those planning on having us make frequent or scheduled modifications to their web site. Learn about Content Management Systems (CMS) websites.

Q: What is a mobile-friendly responsive web site?

A mobile-friendly responsive web design a web site that is optimized for use on mobile-devices such as smartphones and tablets. The techie term for this is “responsive” as in your web site automatically detects the users screen resolution and “responds” by loading the design perfect for that size. You may have noticed that some websites are laid out differently on your desktop than on your smartphone. As of April 2015 Google has begun penalizing websites that are not mobile responsive. This only effects Google searches (so far) done from a user on a mobile device. Have our expert website developers review your web site free of charge and tell you personally if Google reads it as mobile-friendly and if your sites SEO is being penalized. Learn about mobile-friendly responsive websites.

Q: How can I tell if my web site is mobile-friendly responsive?

The easiest way to know if your web site is mobile responsive is to load it on any mobile device and see if your website design allows you to pinch in and out; If you can then chances are that your web site is not responsive. Of course this is just one of many factors Google uses to determine if a website design is mobile responsive or not. Some other major factors Google looks for is large enough text, buttons/links being spread out making them easier to click with your finger and touch-friendly site navigation.

Q: Once my new web site is complete how can we drive traffic and visitors to it?

We will drive traffic to your new web site with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques and make it search engine friendly for major search engines like Google. The first step is to identify and target the custom keywords and key phrases that will result in the best possible SEO results for your new web site. These targeted keywords will be configured in to the code of your web site wherever possible for the maximum benefit. All of our web design packages come with standard Search Engine Optimization at no extra cost. We also offer an Advanced SEO features which will help your search engine page rank even more. We do not participate in any SEO services or techniques that could result in getting your web site and domain name blacklisted by Google and other search engines.

Q: What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

These are techniques and information added to the code of a website to help drive traffic to a website by improving visibility and relevance to major search engines. Standard search engine optimization is included with all of our web site packages at no additional cost. SEO results vary from industry to industry depending on competition for the targeted keywords and key-phrases. Advanced SEO (ASEO) can also be configured to your web site for greater results and traffic (additional add-on). Learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) services.

Q: What kind of keywords and key-phrases should I choose to maximize my SEO?

It depends entirely on the specific industry and location you are attempting to target. However, as a general rule it is important to choose SEO keywords and key-phrases that someone would actually type in and search for when looking to find a website like yours (as opposed to just a business name). The more specific your keywords are – the easier they will be to target, which in turn translates into better SEO results for your web site. Additionally, SEO keywords that are more general or broad tend to be much more competitive and therefore more difficult to benefit from. When choosing relevant SEO keywords it is extremely important to make sure they mirror your web pages actual content, individual links, and code tags. If your targeted keywords do not match what is found in your websites content, then they are what is considered an "orphan keyword" and will most likely be ignored by search engines.

Q: What is an email contact form?

Email contact forms are an easy way for website visitors to contact you. Instead of having to copy and paste your email address or pick up the phone and call, visitors can simply fill-out a form right on your web site. An email contact form consists of several fields which are text-boxes where a visitor can type in their name, email, phone number, message, or whatever you would like. This information submitted (or sent) by the user will get emailed directly to you while an auto-response gets sent to the visitor. All, some or none of the fields can be made required (meaning they need to be filled out before they can be submitted).

Q: What are Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools?

Google Analytics allows you to get detailed statistics about your web site traffic. Discover the who, what and where about the visitors to your web site and learn how to better target your audience.

Google Webmaster Tools allows you to see exactly how Google views your web site and your web sites content. You can easily analyze your sites search data, Google robot crawls, indexes and page ranks.

Both Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools are a must for anyone seeking the best possible results from their web site and can be added to any of our web design packages. With the insight and critical data gained from these tools we can better tweak your web sites content to help drive even more traffic to your web site.

Q: What is the monthly and yearly cost of my new web site?

There is no monthly cost for your new web site. There is a yearly fee for the web site with the first year being included in all of our web design packages. The yearly cost covers everything you need to keep your web site online including domain name registration, hosting (with monthly storage and bandwidth), 24/7/365 monitoring, free automatic nightly backups, updating critical software/platforms (for security and to deter hacking), technical support, email addresses, licensing for design/code, etc.
